Why bother?

RTH .. Looks good in the manual but I’ve read to many instances of it not functioning to expectations. I could be wrong.

I’ve never used RTH, electing to fly it myself. Never had a disconnect that required it so I have no first hand experience other than what has been reported.

Most of the reports you refer to would be other flyers that haven't ever tried RTH to learn what it does and how it does it,
That's why their expectations don't match what RTH does.
The day you need RTH is the worst day to start learning about it.

RTH is very reliable and does what it's programmed to.
RTH problems are usually a result of pilots not understanding what RTH does and how it does it.
