Whats the hole underneath the Phantom 2 for?

I realise that the new H3-3D gimbal needs a hole in the craft to accommodate the 3rd motor. But why did the original Phantom 2 have the smaller hole? I use a Phantom 1 and if I had used a zenmuse H3-2D gimbal that would fix directly on the craft- and there is no hole on the base of the body. Just curious!!

I'd guess that DJI knew they be releasing the H3-3D and would need that bigger hole.
Folks who do installs on first edition Phantom 2s have to have the hole drilled bigger.

I might wanna upgrade to the H3-2D to the 3D. How do you actualy determine what version/edition of the Phantom 2 you own?
