Leaving battery on charge

You should ensure that bags have vents for hot air to escape. I have also not used bags for charging as I always charge in an quite empty space and never leave them on charge for very long unattended. Usually nothing bad happens but precautions are needed to avoid the worst.

As the batteries get older, though you feel more confident as nothing has happened so far but you should know batteries are becoming bad use by use as they lose charge holding capacity.

Thats a sad story so when is the time to stop using a battery? Any certain % of battery life?

I just leave the charger on a 1/4 inch thick aluminum plate in the shop. It can smoke, spew and fizzle all it wants. It will trigger the smoke detectors (which is a plus) and smell bad but it won't burn the house down. I leave two batteries on charge all of the time. Never know when Elvis starts to land in a UFO (I saw Elvis in Vegas last week, he looked pretty good).

Thanks to everyone for your answers and opinions.
I think i figured out what i will do.
Ill wait for charging one battery. And after plug in second one i will use the timer socket i have. You can set to two hours countdown and it will stop electricity going through after that time. By 2 hrs passed battery will be definitely charged

I wonder though if leaving a battery connected to an unplugged charger has any negative impact?
I wrote DJI all these questions and their answer naturally was to unplug after charging. Perhaps someone with engineering knowledge of the actual DJI battery & charger can shed some light on the subject, or at least someone who leaves they batteries on the chargers all the time?

No need to attend to as it is not charging after it is charged.

Hypothetically: What happens if left on the charger for ten or more days when the built in battery auto-discharge kicks in?

+1 on the lipo charging bag. That's what I use when charging unattended.

Hey, i just got an idea for self popping popcorn bags without needing a microwave oven

New P3A owner here. This morning I charged 1 battery until the lights went out. This took about 45min. Them I started charging the second and went out to the store and breakfast and returned home 1 1/2 hours later to find the battery blinking 4 lights indicating still charging. I thought this wasn't right. I unplugged the battery and then plugged it back in and the lights were out indicating full charge.
The battery was bought from dji directly.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I won't be leaving it unattended again.

Yes. I hav 5 batteries and four chargers. The batteries vary in charging times from use to use. That you unplugged then plugged back in a battery near full and it decided it was charged is normal. However I would be conserned if the battery had stayed at all 4 lights blinking for more than about half an hour.

You are right, absolutely right.

These batteries get totally disconnected when fully charged. But after all we know that nothing is perfect and charger may fail, electronics that senses charge through trickle current or voltage level might fail, batteries internals might fail and question is do we want an increased level of safety? We know that Samsung Note 7 batteries started burning under certain conditions...

When I return home after a flying session, I place the used batteries, usually all three of mine, in the DJI storage to bring them back up to around 50% until I am ready for the next flight. Then I charge then and go.
Any problems with leaving them in storage mode between flights?

It's best to store batteries when they are between 30-65% charged.

NEVER leave your battery charging unattended. It can explode and start a fire when something goes wrong in the charger or battery, I was sitting in the same room when mine exploded while charging. It set the carpet on fire as well as some documents close to it.
If you have to leave it unattended do it outside away from everything or in a place where a fire cannot start or do any damage.;

I don't do it. I've accidently left them on the charger and they've been fine but to me, it's just not worth the possible risk. These batteries can be very dangerous. Although, there may not be many accidents, all it takes is the one that burns down my home or kills one of my loved ones. I've got a multicharger and can have 4 batteries charged in about an hour. By the time I wake up and have a cup or two of coffee, I'm ready to roll! Just my opinion, of course.

NO NO NEVER leave a charging battery unattended mine exploded and almost set the house on fire or charge it outside where it cannot cause damage

NEVER leave a charging battery unattended it can explode I had a new DJI charger with new DJI battery it exploded after about an hour of charge

Unattended charging is not good? So, I'm supposed to pull up a chair and stare at them for an hour and 20 minutes? What if I need a pee break?

As others have stated, the battery charge controller circuitry is smart enough to disconnect all power once the CC/CV charge sequence is complete. The IC would have to spontaneously short out to allow charging to continue after this and that would be incredibly rare. That said it is also good to unplug the charger when done..

If you need the batteries first thing in the morning.. Why don't you consider an outlet timer and set the timer for 1.3x the expected time needed. That way it will disconnect from mains voltage and eliminate the hazard while keeping you from getting up at 2AM.

OK let me put it this way, you dont really have to stare at it, but be in the same room or closeby, a good idea might be if you have to take a break put the battery in a metal bucket or container. In my case I was in the room next to it when it exploded and burst into flames, I had to run downstairs to get the fire extinguisher it took me only a minute during that time the carpet caught fire as well as some documents next to it. Be safe

I went for the intelligent battery charger from DJI and have found it to do a good job of maintaining the life of my batteries. Anytime I'm not using for 5+days i just put it to storage mode which trickles them at 50%
