Installed Coffee's v8 modded app last night. Was curious if it would work as I am still running 3.0 firmware. The GS part of the app works great. Can't reset RTH altitude with 3.0 firmware, and haven't tested the "Follow Me" mode. Battery indicator on the app works but doesn't show the red/yellow/green segments, which is fine with me. Flew two GS missions last night...first one over 5 miles (round trip), second one 5.7 (RT) miles. The Live 3G makes you feel bold since you know you can at least track her down. This morning I flew four more GS missions, pushing it a little further with each run. Last run was 3.5 miles from home, 7.1 miles total distance. I love launching then watching the mission progress on the computer's Flytrex "Live Flight" screen. Very cool!
Late afternoon I set up a direct flight here to a buddy's house. About 3.2 miles distant, no wind, battery at 100%. Off she goes, I am inside watching it on the screen and I call him. I know he will be sitting outside drinking beer. I tell him to look up. A few moments later the Phantom is over his head and he's cracking up. It stops, rotates, and heads for home. I'm watching her return and when she gets about half a mile away, she suddenly stops and starts losing altitude. Crikes here we go again! Where's the chainsaw!
I see on the Flytrex "Last seen" she is a few blocks away right over the back yard of the last house on the left of 207th street. About 500 meters short of making it back. I pull up to the house, knock and ask if its OK to look for my quad. The lady says sure. Just then a guy says "Are you looking for your helicopter? Its right behind that house." Cool. She hit the trees coming down. Finally broke a prop!
Probably fell from that point to the ground. Bird is laying upside down, One blade broken off (didn't see find the missing piece), battery ejected right next to her, and I can see right away the main gimbal post is bent. Camera still attached, ribbon undamaged. Head home to access the damage.
Was still using the props from the last tree landing. Broke out a set of the DJI blue-tipped ones I bought months ago. Battery appears fine...no physical damage. Surveyed the gimbal. Big pair of pliers, taped the teeth, gently bent the main gimbal shaft back straight. The moment of truth...powered her up. Had to tweak the bend just a hair as the main support was touching the plate when yawing. One more slight bend...everything seems ok. Took her out for a quick test flight, all appears OK. Will run IMU calibration a little later.
What I am unsure of is why she stopped and autolanded at 10.72 volts? I installed Coffee's latest v9 app just before the flight but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I have autoland/RTH disabled in the app. I had flown over 7.1 miles earlier, and the battery voltage on that flight was identical (different battery though I have 4). All in all I am pretty fortunate 1) to have the Live 3G. Trust me it works for finding your bird. She was again exactly where it showed her to be! 2) The gimbal survived relatively unscathed.
Does anyone know off the top of their head the voltage threshold at which this thing autolands?
