Just curious if anyone has heard of anybody getting fined for flying an unregistered flying camera

The FAA has very limited enforcement capability. You won't find them hiding in the bushes. But I wouldn't say the chances are zero. Someone could report you. Or they could find video evidence. Or local authorities could hand you over.

Meanwhile, the penalties are huge. Why would you risk it? What's the downside of registering?

You could be innocently flying one day, obeying all the guidelines, and some moron will call the cops - just because. They show up, and you have an unregistered drone. That is not a good thing.

See that's the thing. FAA doesn't need lots of inspectors. All it takes is any cop asking or any complaint.
The FAA can refer it to the cops to look into and then take it up from the cop's findings.

Given the insane penalties for an unregistered sUAS, the potential consequences of flying unregistered don't make any sense to accept, even if the likelihood is low.
