Do you need to de-register it with DJI? I know they have you register your products to your user id or something. How does that whole process work? I'm about to sell my drone and I assume I should tell him.

It's not possible to de-register a drone with DJI. The new owner will just need to install DJI GO and login with their DJI account credentials.
Sweet - so what does the registration do for the user? Like is that info needed for like repair or if something hardware/software wise goes wrong?

The registration process is really just the drone activation process. When the new user logs into DJI GO using their DJI account credentials, DJI will be able to tell the drone is being used by someone else.
