Miami-Fort Lauderdale Airspace Proposed Amendments

For those who live in South Florida there are two NPRM’s to modify the Miami Class B, and Fort Lauderdale Class C airspace. This may affect where you fly at and the need to use LAANC more often than not. I’ve included a webinar to a Miami VFR Transition from the www.ninety-nines.org that also explains why the change is needed among other things. This change might be here by November so heads up to all you south Floridians.

Can someone dumb this down for drone hobbyist
with P4P+ set to 327 ft height limit?
At one time distance from MIA had to be > 5 mi,
then it was reduced to >3 mi?
Was distance changed again...?

Hobbyist rules used to be 5 statute miles from center of airport. MIA surface class B airspace extends to about 7.5 statute miles from center of airport meaning that you could have flown outside of the 5 statute mile requirement but still be in class B surface airspace and not have to notify ATC as a hobbyist.
The rule now for hobbyist, as it has been part 107, is you have to get authorization before flying in controlled airspace, class B, C D, and E surface airports. The height limit is specified in the grid of intended flight in the particular airspace with the authorization. Outside of controlled airspace, class G, the height limit is 400 ft agl.
The new FAA test requirement for hobbyist to fly should be out sometime in June 2021.
This new proposal for MIA would extent MIA class B surface airspace further than the 7.5 statute miles from center of airport as it stands now. So if where you fly now is class G it could be Class B by the end of the year.

There is no set in stone distance from airport. It is not a complete and perfect circle. You are going to have to learn about airspace to pass the new hobbyists test coming out. Use the B4UFLY app and place a pin on the map and it will let you know if you need authorization or not.
As for right now I wouldn’t worry to much about what the airspace will look like at a certain time in the future as much as what it is today.

Distance is not the deciding factor since the FAA Reauthorization Act in 2018. You need to learn how to read a sectional chart. You can fly in Class G airspace to a height of 400 feet AGL without authorization. All controlled airspace Classes B, C, D, E and others require authorization via LAANC or through application on the FAA DroneZone website.
