Lock gimbal function?

"Added lock gimbal function to fix the gimbal to its current position."

Anyone knows what exactly this does and how/when it's to be used? I've read a few assumptions (everything from twitch elimination to camera lock on position), but would like to know for sure... Haven't yet had a chance to fly it since the FW update.
