something definitely confused it. I'd imagine it was the cars coming into view that threw it off.

It appears that at the moment it started to fly away the background got black as did you and the dog as you, the target became backlighted. The fly away behavior was just as the manual predicted in that situation.

The hardest thing to manage with drone video production is lighting. In my opinion, you need to avoid backlighting at all costs.
